Abstract:
Nigerian forests are shrinking at a rate faster than that of their growth. Thus, Nigerian environment faces a very serious threatened condition consequent to human activities in their magnitude and amplitude. To reduce this threat and rejuvenate the Nigerian environment, trees are considered to be a great asset and positive factor. This study attempts to unravel the conservation efficiency and effectiveness of trees in conservation biology, environmental sustainability and it suggests ways by which planting and conservation of trees could be improved upon.

Library Resources And Service Utilisation By Undergraduate Students: A Case Study Of The Federal University Of Technology, Akure, Nigeria

Year Published:

Abstract:
Four hundred and ten undergraduates were surveyed with the aim of finding out what library resources and services were most known to and used by them, extent of their dependence on the library and their reasons for using the library, the length of time spent in the library and what constraints they experienced in their use of the library. The results showed that reference (85.4%), catalogue (75.1%) and book loans (70.2%) were the resources most known to students. Textbooks (91.2%), newspapers (51.2%) and reference materials (46.1%) were mostly used by them. The respondents visited the library to read textbooks (72.2%), personal notes and books (64.4%) and do their assignments (63.7%). Majority spent more than five hours in the library. The major constraints facing students in the library are unavailability of current books (? = :48, SD= .50), poor shelf arrangement 0 = .40, SD= .49), unfriendly staff (? = .23, SD= .42). The study recommends more libray-based activities to students, sensitising students to use non-print materials since these attracted low patronage, current arid relevant books should be acquired into the library and shelf arrangement be given attention.

Year Published:
 2010
Abstract:
This study investigated the effect of user education titled Information Retrieval on awareness and use of library resources and academic activities of non fresh male and female undergraduates of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. The instrument for the study was a questionnaire administered on them. A total of 250 copies of the questionnaire were administered to the respondents. This produced a response rate of 87.2% by the return of 218 copies. The study revealed that exposure to Information Retrieval on the part of the students improved awareness and use of reading facilities, ability to locate ranked next while interlibrary loan facilities ranked least in each case on the Liken scale. The study also indicated that exposure to Information Retrieval made 50.5% have a very great improvement in their overall performance while 44.98% also improved in a similar manner in their tests and examinations. However, improvement in special skills was not as pronounced. Teaching Librarians should emphasize library resources and pay more attention to audio-visual resources and computer facilities. More practical classes should be given. Current laboratory manuals should be acquired into the library and interlibrary loan facilities should be activated.

Abstract:
Limited research has been undertaken on the perceptions of environmental issues held by women in the West African Sub-Sahara. This study explored the understanding of women in Ondo State, Nigeria on environmental information. Using a questionnaire-administered survey, data were collected on women’s perception and knowledge on environmental issues, their attitude and participation in environmental activities and organization with a sample size of 1,250 through a multistage random selection technique from fifty-two communities in Ondo State. 62.5% perceived the environment as the place they live. 37.9% related environmental problems to this also. Majority related climatic changes, population escalation and depleting resources to their country. Women show some degree of environmental knowledge. The three most severe environmental problems are increasing population (X = 4.20, SD= 1.14), erosion (X = 4.07, SD = 1.19), and poor drainage (X = 4.20, SD = 1.22). Women attitude to environmental responsibility is a collective one. 81.53% of women with 11-15 years residency participated in environmental organizations. However, rural residents participated more in environmental activities and organization than urban women. The result provides support that the potential and capacity of the women should be exploited in decision-making process in environmental management and sustainability.
